Dennis Schneidler-USA TODAY SportsHockey’s worst-kept secret was finally revealed Monday, when the NHL released the “Hometown Remix” jerseys for all 32 teams. For Islanders fans, it marked the third coming of the divisive Fisherman. For Islanders fans of a certain age, the Fisherman logo serves as a reminder of the franchise’s worst years on and off the ice. The 1995-96 season, when the change was made, marked the team’s worst full season since the inaugural campaign in 1972-73. Mike Milbury went from being just a bad coach to becoming the general manager, where his disastrous moves set the team back years. Right after that John Spano tried to buy the team.Good times. The fact that the Islanders wore those jerseys during what was their darkest time certainly did not help the Fisherman’s cause. Nor did the fact that it was such an abrupt change from the simple, clean – some would call iconic – jerseys that the team wore during the halcyon days of the early 80s. (Sidenote: The Islanders website detailing the new jersey calls the Fisherman “iconic.” It is, I assure you, most certainly not that.)But the 90s were a different time. People were looking toward the future. Colors like teal and silver were trendy, and everything was baggy. Unfortunately, the additional colors, the nautical waves and the captain of the Downeaster, Alexa, were just too much to take on at once.In fact, I loved it when the team benched the Fisherman and brought back the original Islanders logo on the wavy jersey. That was a fresh look and one the team should look to bring back now and then. But I stopped being in the demographic that helped shape choices like these a decade or more ago.Islanders Try AgainOf course, this isn’t the first time the Fisherman has returned. Adidas did its money grab back in 2022, when the Fisherman appeared on a navy jersey with some kind of orange-and-white stripe concoction.Bad fashion comes back around every so often, so five years later, it’s Fanatics turn to see if they can make some money off the ill-fated logo. I guess they thought it would sell better than the orange alternates the team wore back in Rick DiPietro’s heyday.A quick look at social media found the responses mixed to the remix jersey. Many Islanders fans still can’t accept the Fisherman, while a few liked the changes Fanatics made. Removing the net behind the Fisherman made it look less cluttered. Tweaking the lighthouses with “LI” and “NY” references won over some. That jersey on Schaefer is like letting a toddler fingerpaint a Monet.— FrankVoiceIsles (@VoiceIslanderFn) November 2, 2026For me, the new jersey is a hard no, even if I agree it looks better than either the original from 30 years ago or whatever Adidas put out five years ago.The Fisherman Deserves to Stay RetiredFanatics was close on this, but making the lighthouse the primary logo would have looked a lot better. There’s a reason why fans picked the lighthouse in the third jersey v
