Report: Cowboys legend Jason Witten promoted to offensive play-caller at Oklahoma

By admin — In News — November 3, 2026

Cowboys legend Jason Witten followed up a 17-year NFL career (and one failed side-quest season in the broadcast booth) by coaching high school football in Argyle, Tex. for five years, winning consecutive state championships along the way. Then he made the jump to the college ranks, joining the staff at the University of Oklahoma as the school’s tight ends coach for the 2026 season. After just five games, he’s already getting a promotion.Witten has been named the Sooners’ new offensive play caller, according to reports Monday. The program fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle following a 42-25 home loss to South Carolina over the weekend. Witten will now reportedly handle those duties for the remainder of the season.Despite a 4-4 record, Oklahoma’s offense currently ranks last in the SEC in yards per game and next-to-last in points per game.Witten’s son Cooper is a five-star linebacker still in his senior year back at Liberty Christian but has already committed to join the Sooners in 2027.Sources indicate to https://t.co/9IVxQS4FYu, TEs coach Jason Witten will takeover as playcaller for Oklahoma https://t.co/zSDWdRb1v6pic.twitter.com/ZO6XeTl7u0— SoonerScoop.com (@SoonerScoop) November 2, 2026The 44-year-old Witten was a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year in his first year of ballot eligibility. He holds the Cowboys franchise records for receptions, receiving yards, and games played. In addition to his 11 Pro Bowl nods, Witten was a first-team All-Pro twice, was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2012, and is enshrined in the Sports Hall of Fame in two different states. Now that the ex-Cowboy is also rising quickly up the ladder in the coaching ranks at a major collegiate program, it’s just a matter of time before his name pops up in conversations for NFL coaching jobs. Perhaps even in Dallas, where his place in the Cowboys Ring of Honor is already a mere formality… and the fanbase is growing increasingly frustrated with the current regime. This article originally appeared on Cowboys Wire: Report: Cowboys legend Jason Witten promoted to offensive play-caller at Oklahoma
