After opening the 2026 season with an undefeated record, Miami has earned the No. 1 spot in the first College Football Playoff rankings, putting the Hurricanes in position to compete for a national championship. At 8-0, Miami has been one of the most impressive teams in the country. The Hurricanes have consistently found ways to win and have shown they have the talent to compete with the nation’s best programs. The ranking is also historic for the program. Miami has never previously been ranked No. 1 in the College Football Playoff selection committee’s rankings. The Hurricanes are now the 11th different program to claim the top position in CFP history.Miami Is Making Its Championship CaseOne of the biggest reasons for Miami’s success has been its ability to remain undefeated through a challenging schedule. The Hurricanes recently picked up a 38-35 victory over North Carolina, surviving a difficult road test on Halloween night. While the close win showed that Miami is not unbeatable, it also demonstrated the team’s ability to perform under pressure.Head coach Mario Cristobal deserves plenty of credit for getting his team to this point. Miami has developed into a legitimate national championship contender, and its undefeated record has given the selection committee plenty of reasons to place the Hurricanes at the top.The offense has also delivered throughout the season, with quarterback Darian Mensah and talented playmakers like Malachi Toney helping Miami remain dangerous.A Huge Test Is ComingAlthough Miami has earned the No. 1 ranking, the Hurricanes cannot afford to become comfortable.Their upcoming matchup against Notre Dame could be one of the most important games of the season. Miami already defeated Notre Dame earlier this year, but another victory would further strengthen its playoff resume. With additional games against Duke, Virginia Tech and Boston College remaining, the Hurricanes still have opportunities to protect their undefeated record. Can Miami Finish the Job?Being No. 1 in the first CFP rankings is a major accomplishment, but Miami knows the ultimate goal is much bigger. The Hurricanes want to compete for a national championship, and they have put themselves in an excellent position to make that happen.Miami has officially announced itself as one of college football’s teams to beat. Now, the challenge is maintaining that momentum when the pressure gets even higher.
