Mike Elko pushes back on idea Texas A&M has nothing to play for

The Texas A&M Aggies opened the season at No. 8 in the AP poll and reached November at 4-4, with a 1-4 record in the SEC. Head coach Mike Elko sat down at Rudy’s Country Store and BBQ in College Station for Wednesday night’s Aggie Football Hour and took on the idea that a season like that has run out of reasons to care.“I told the guys, ‘Listen, we had high expectations for where this thing could go, and obviously we haven’t met those, but there’s still a massive difference between 4-8 and 8-4.’ So when you say there’s nothing to play for, in my opinion, there’s a lot to play for. There’s a lot to play for every single week in terms of continuing to invest in what we started this journey to be about,” Elko said, according to On3’s Carter Karels.Mike Elko Reassures Texas A&M Fans After Much-Needed Contract Extension(Credit: Troy Taormina-Imagn Images)Texas A&M coach Mike Elko on his weekly radio show: “I told the guys, ‘Listen, we had high expectations for where this thing could go, and obviously we haven’t met those, but there’s still a massive difference between 4-8 and 8-4.’“So when you say there’s nothing to play for, in my opinion, there’s a lot to play for. The last time Texas A&M finished 4-8 was 2008, in Mike Sherman’s first season, so the low end of Elko’s range would be a result no Aggies team has produced in 18 years. What does Texas A&M still have to play for?The first College Football Playoff rankings, released on Tuesday, split the Aggies’ season cleanly in two. All four losses came against teams in the top 25: the No. 5 Alabama Crimson Tide, No. 6 Kentucky Wildcats, No. 14 LSU Tigers and No. 18 Missouri Tigers. None of the four teams they beat is ranked.Three of the four games left are against teams in that same group. The Aggies visit the No. 21 South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday, host the No. 13 Tennessee Volunteers on Nov. 14, travel to the Oklahoma Sooners on Nov. 21 and finish against the No. 7 Texas Longhorns at Kyle Field on Nov. 27.Elko’s 8-4 would take a win in all of those games, three of them over the kind of opponent Texas A&M has not beaten this year.
If the pattern from the first eight games simply holds, the Aggies would beat Oklahoma, lose the other three and finish 5-7. That makes one upset the difference between staying home in December and playing in a bowl, which is a more concrete answer to the “nothing to play for” crowd than any record Elko named.Nov 15, 2025; College Station, Texas, USA; Texas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Elko reacts on the sideline during the second quarter against the South Carolina Gamecocks at Kyle Field.
