DAVID HUGHES: Like Bill Belichick famously said, ‘We’re on to Cincinnati’

In a 2014 news conference following a humbling loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, then-New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick responded to reporters’ questions about the setback by repeatedly saying, “We’re on to Cincinnati.”Always focused back then — before he found a girlfriend almost one-third his age — Belichick was referring to the Patriots’ next game against the Cincinnati Bengals, whom they routed 43-17.Come to think of it, the city of Cincinnati has provided plenty of memorable moments in my personal life too. I had my two serious cancer surgeries and most of my cancer treatments there in 2009 and 2010.As a sports fan, I witnessed the 1978-79 Indiana State men’s basketball team knock off the stubborn Arkansas Razorbacks 73-71, thanks in large part to Larry Bird’s 31 points and 10 rebounds and Bob Heaton’s buzzer-beating, 8-foot, left-handed shot from inside Riverfront Coliseum. That Midwest Regional instant classic propelled the undefeated Sycamores into the NCAA Final Four at Salt Lake City … and you all know what happened there. Also as a fan, I accepted Mark Bennett’s generous offer of his tickets to attend a St. Louis Cardinals-Cincinnati Reds doubleheader Sept. 7, 1993, at Riverfront Stadium. In the nine-inning nightcap, I saw the Cardinals’ Mark Whiten belt four home runs and knock in 12 runs, putting on one of the most amazing single-game offensive performances in Major League Baseball history.(Terre Haute’s Brian Dorsett may not like this reminder, but he was hanging around the bag defensively for the Reds when Whiten rounded first base after his fourth bomb, a two-run shot to center field off reliever Rob Dibble in the ninth inning. I never asked Brian if he quietly said anything to Whiten then. Dorsett did deliver a single earlier in the game, going 1 for 2.)Least importantly but still worth mentioning, the original “WKRP in Cincinnati” — which aired on CBS when I was a young adult — ranks as one of my top 10 all-time favorite television shows. (Anyone down for a turkey drop on Thanksgiving?)Back to the future, I won’t be in The Queen City this Saturday. But I’ll be checking my work computer in the afternoon to see how Rose-Hulman’s football team is faring against Mount St. Joseph, which is located in … try to guess which city.Coach Jeff Sokol’s Engineers have put themselves in position to claim their first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship since 2021 when that team clobbered Mount St. Joseph 58-21 in the regular-season finale at Cook Stadium.Rose entered that matchup with a 6-0 conference record and MSJ was 5-1, so an MSJ victory would have created a two-way tie at the top of the standings and the Lions would have represented the HCAC in the NCAA Division III playoffs based on head-to-head competition. But those 2021 Engineers would have no part of that. They kicked butt and took names.Since then, however, it’s been a different story. Mount St. Joseph captured HCAC titles in 2022, 2023 and 2024 and
