After falling short to Charlotte on Monday, Indiana State’s men’s basketball team will look to rebound in more ways than one at Ball State’s Worthen Arena on Friday. The Sycamores will obviously look to rebound from the loss, but will also look to physically rebound down low. ISU was outrebounded 40-25 in Monday’s 78-70 setback dealt by Charlotte.“I think it’s a mindset,” ISU coach Matthew Graves said. “Everyone’s capable of going to rebound the basketball. It’s more of an effort in attention to detail and willingness to go hit somebody and go get the basketball.”Graves said the Sycamores will roll out the same starting rotation as they did Monday: E.J. McQuillan, Karmani Gregory, Maguire Mitchell, Jackson Cooper and Alessio Calamita. Graves also indicated substitutions are fluid as the Sycamores are trying to figure out the right rotations. With only one regular-season game under their belt, the Sycamores are still trying to figure out what their players can do when the lights come on, according to Graves. The Cardinals have also only played one regular-season contest, losing to Georgia Southern 67-55.“You kind of glean some things from exhibitions and then obviously both of us have played one regular-season game,” Graves said. “But at the end of the day, the biggest thing that we try to do is take care of ourselves.”Something ISU took advantage of Monday was turnovers as Graves’ squad capitalized for 17 points off 16 Charlotte miscues. The veteran coach said that goes back to the Sycamores’ play on defense.“I thought against Charlotte, we were tremendous in keeping the ball in front and when they would pass, we would really jump to the ball and we would be very active in our gaps,” Graves said. “I certainly think that led to some of their turnovers.”Javion Guy-king, a 6-foot-6 senior guard, led the Cardinals with 12 points in their defeat Monday. Former Linton High School standout Joey Hart — a 6-5 senior guard — also played that game, posting six points and two rebounds in 15 minutes of action off the bench.Graves said his Sycamores switch a lot on defense, so different guys will be guarding Guy-king.“I think a lot of times when you give guys different looks, you can try to keep them out of rhythm and off balance,” Graves said. “So we have to do that and in doing that, our communication and our switching has to be at an elite level because if it’s not, you look up and he has 20 points on you.”Ball State coach Chris Capko, in his first season at the helm, said the Cardinals are still trying to figure out who their go-to guy will be, but that Guy-king will be a leading candidate. After dropping 29 points on Charlotte on Monday, Gregory will be the focal point of the Ball State defense Friday, according to Capko.“That’s going to be a full-team effort,” Capko said. “Obviously one guy will be on him, but every time he’s somewhere and he has the ball, we have to have 10 eyes on him.
