The growing pains of an entirely new roster showed for Lady Vols basketball in its first road game of the season.Tennessee led Coppin State by just two points after the first quarter, and it only scored 12 points total. But the Lady Vols recovered from their sluggish start in Baltimore and routed the Eagles 98-60 on Nov. 5, scoring 63 points in the second and third quarters.Fifth-year guard Kaylene Smikle once again led Tennessee (2-0) in scoring with 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Smikle had a slow start, though, due to foul trouble in the first half that sent her to the bench. The game was called tightly by the officials. The two teams combined to shoot 57 free throws. It was an ugly, grind-it-out win for most of the night at Coppin State (1-1), but Lady Vols coach Kim Caldwell was glad her team got an early road test.”They gave us a great first quarter, and we needed that. We came out a little bit rattled, and their pressure got to us,” Caldwell said on the MEAC Network broadcast. “I think the environment was good for our newer players, our younger players. We appreciated that, it’s something that made us better.”Tennessee returns home to Food City Center for a matchup with New Haven on Nov. 10 (6:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network+).Gabby Minus has another strong outingFreshman Gabby Minus struggled to hit shots but that didn’t stop her. Her efforts never waned, though, and she continued to crash the boards, defend and get to the rim. That’s how she ended up with her first career double-double despite going 1-for-9 from the field. Minus got in the paint and drew fouls, and she shot 10-for-12 on free throws to score 12 points with 11 rebounds, three steals, two assists and block.”She’s relentless. She had seven offensive rebounds as a freshman, and I think that’s just her will is to go in there and do that,” Caldwell said on Vol Network. “Our team was very complimentary of her tonight in the locker room, and I think that that’s good for her confidence and just continuing to teach her live and getting game experience under her belt.”Lady Vols have tough night finishing at the rim Tennessee struggled to get into an offensive rhythm for much of the first half, and part of it was due to an awful night finishing at the rim.The Lady Vols missed 22 layups, going 12-for-34 overall, which was almost the same as their 3-point shooting. Tennessee shot 13-for-35 from range, but most of the 3-point scoring was in the second half after it only shot 3-for-12 in the first. The Lady Vols scored 12 of their 30 second-quarter points at the free throw line.It was also a rough first half on the boards with the Eagles outrebounding Tennessee 23-22. The Lady Vols cleaned it up in the second half and ultimately out-rebounded Coppin State 50-36.”We needed this. We knew it was going to be a loud, hostile environment. We’re a very young team. We’re a new team,” Caldwell said on Vol Network. “We got sped up, just missed a lot of layups, really. Didn’t turn it over t
