The Detroit Tigers may have dodged a worst-case outcome with star catcher Dillon Dingler after a scary moment Wednesday night against the Oakland Athletics. Dingler exited in the top of the second inning when he was hit by a 95 mph sinker off his right throwing hand. The incident sparked immediate concern at Comerica Park, especially given the breakout season the 27-year-old has been enjoying.
Dingler absorbed the foul tip and remained behind home plate as Tigers manager A.J. Hinch and the club’s training staff evaluated his hand. He tried a few warmup throws and completed the defensive half inning before Detroit opted to remove him from the game prior to his next plate appearance. Television cameras later captured a noticeable imprint of the baseball’s seams on the top of Dingler’s hand near his thumb, highlighting the impact of the blow.
After the game, Hinch offered what appeared to be encouraging news. “Dillon Dingler’s initial X-rays were negative. He will go in tomorrow for further testing,” Hinch said. While the negative X-rays are a positive early sign, the Tigers will await additional imaging before determining whether Dingler will be out of the lineup for any length of time.
The timing of the injury could not be worse for Detroit. Dingler is enjoying the best season of his young career and had recently been selected to his first MLB All-Star Game, becoming the Tigers’ first catcher to earn the honor in 15 years. Heading into Wednesday’s game, Dingler was hitting .264 with a league-leading 19 home runs and 60 RBIs, establishing himself as one of the premier two-way catchers in baseball.
Dingler’s spring training form and his breakthrough performance this season have positioned him as a central figure in Detroit’s lineup. The Tigers now shift their focus to Thursday’s follow-up evaluation, which is expected to shed more light on his availability for the near future and influence the club’s plans for handling the position if Dingler needs to miss time.
For Tigers fans, there is some relief in knowing the initial tests did not reveal a fracture. Yet the full prognosis remains uncertain until the next round of imaging is completed. The pending results will be crucial in determining Dingler’s short-term status and whether he can continue his impactful two-way contributions from behind the plate and in the batter’s box. As the club awaits further clarification, the hope is that Dingler can quickly resume his duties and keep contributing at the level that has made him one of the game’s most promising young talents.
