Newcastle had previously managed to retain their most vital players, but the team that created history by ending a seven-decade wait for a major domestic trophy in 2025 has now broken up. Among the 26 players pictured in a jubilant team photograph after their EFL Cup final victory over Liverpool, 11 have already departed the club.
Some changes were overdue, yet there remains a fine balance to maintain. Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe acknowledged this in one of his final press conferences of the previous season, insisting that the squad cannot grow weaker. The current squad does have evident gaps, but it is understood the club has made progress on a pursuit for exciting Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi. In addition, Newcastle have completed the signings of winger Bazoumana Toure, midfielder Sean Steur, and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen.
Turning to younger players from European clubs is a strategy that has proven successful for others. Bournemouth, who finished sixth last season, demonstrated how a club can rebound from the loss of key personnel through shrewd recruitment and solid coaching. Yet experience remains crucial, and Bruno Guimarães is invaluable to Newcastle in that regard. Losing him would cast serious doubt on the entire project.
