Aaron Glenn says he and Ben Johnson made each other better as coaches

Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson will be coaching against each other when the Jets face the Bears on Sunday, and although it’s the first time they’ve faced off in a game, they have plenty of experience coaching against each other.Glenn and Johnson spent four years together on the Lions’ coaching staff from 2021 to 2024, with Glenn coaching the defense and Johnson coaching the offense. Glenn says matching wits when their units went against each other on the practice field helped both of them grow.”We were so competitive in move the ball situations on how we wanted to beat each other, but it made both of us better, I will say that,” Glenn said. “He’s a damn good coach.”Glenn said he and Johnson also picked each other’s brains and worked together on scheduling practices for both units to get the work they needed.”When you have coordinators, offensive and defensive coordinators, you’re really planning practice,” Glenn said. “You’re really planning the things you want to see against each other so the communication between me and him was always outstanding. . . . Just talking offensive and defensive football was good to have.”Both men left Detroit in 2025, and Johnson has had more success as a head coach: He’s 13-7 in the regular season, won a playoff game last year, and has Chicago looking like a playoff contender again this year. Glenn is 4-16 as the Jets’ coach, and on the hot seat. Glenn is going to need to win more games if he’s going to keep his job beyond this season, and he’d love to start with his old friend on Sunday.
