ACC Releases Football Tiebreaker Policy and it Actually Works Well

By admin — In News — July 16, 2026

Last season, Duke won the tiebreaker over Miami and went to the ACC Championship game against Virginia despite only being 7-5 overall. That was not the best look for the ACC and the conference knew it had to revise things. Add to that the scheduling change coming this year where most teams will move to nine conference games, but a handful will stick with eight for a bit longer and it gets more complex.Fortunately, and maybe shockingly, they come up with a fantastic solution centered on neither punishing nor helping teams for the number of ACC games they play. The first and most important thing to understand is that if you’re tied in either the win or the loss column, you are effectively tied. In MLB we call this being “a half game up.” Often, a baseball fan will say, “we’re a half game up but tied in the loss column.” That sort of language will now be relevant here.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIf there’s just two things to remember, here they are. 1) If you have the same number of conference wins or conference losses as another team, you’re effectively tied. 2) If you’ve played, head-to-head will break the tie. If you haven’t, it will go to SportsSource Analytics which includes non-conference games.Last year it went by ACC record of your opponents meaning a random late season game between UNC and Syracuse could be what determines if Miami or Duke play for a championship. Now, the team with the better overall resume including non-conference games will get the bid. This is a major change and would have sent Miami to Charlotte instead of Duke.I break down several scenarios in the video below and you can read the official tiebreaker policy below that if anything remains unclear. I think they actually did a great job but let us know what you think in the comments.ACC Football TiebreakerDefining Tied Teams:a.
