Aidan Emmerich and Zachary Georgantas set for final in Mass. Amateur Golf Championship

A new amateur golf champion will emerge from Massachusetts. After a rain-delayed start to the week, the 118th Massachusetts Amateur Golf Championship concluded its semifinals on Friday at Winchester Country Club, where Aidan Emmerich and Zachary Georgantas earned their spots in the final. Emmerich, who has built momentum over the past three years at the Mass Amateur, and Georgantas, the Foxboro High School graduate and Providence College commit, will compete on Saturday for the title, with the winner earning recognition among the state’s most storied names in amateur golf.
Emmerich’s path to the final has been a steady climb. He plays out of Kernwood Country Club in Salem and has stacked consecutive improvements at the Mass Amateur in recent years. After narrowly missing the Round of 32 in 2024, Emmerich pushed through a semifinal battle against the tournament’s 2024 champion, Matt Naumec of Wilbraham, on Friday. The match began with both players trading pars through the opening five holes, with neither gaining a significant edge. On the par-3 sixth, Emmerich seized the moment with a birdie to jump ahead of Naumec, only for Naumec to respond with a birdie on the seventh to re-tie the scores.
A pair of bogeys on the eighth (Naumec) and ninth (Emmerich) kept the match even heading into the back nine. Then Emmerich took control. He moved out front with a decisive surge after the 14th hole, expanding his lead to two holes as the Swampscott native moved into the driving seat. Naumec managed to erase one of the gaps with a rally, but a bogey on the 18th hole sealed Emmerich’s victory and sent him to the final with a 70, one under par for the course.
“It hasn’t really set in,” Emmerich stated after the match to Mass Golf. “That was a stressful match. Even being 2-up against someone like Matt, it’s never really over until it’s over. But I’m pumped. Like I said, there was a goal in my mind this year.”
Meanwhile, Georgantas and Jake Mrva contended in the other semifinal. Georgantas, drawing strength from his recent high school graduation and his commitment to Providence College, started slowly, falling two holes behind Mrva after the third hole. But the rookie at this event did not back down. The two players traded pars and bogeys for several holes, with Georgantas beginning to gain momentum around the ninth. He pulled even with a par as Mrva bogeyed, setting the stage for a shift in momentum.
Georgantas continued to press on the back nine, stringing together a stretch of pars that put him in command. Through 14 holes, Georgantas held a two-hole advantage thanks to steady play and Mrva’s mistakes. Georgantas extended his lead with a birdie at the 15th, moving three holes ahead. The 16th hole finished with a par-par exchange, sealing Georgantas’ semifinal victory and producing a final score of 64 for Georgantas through 16 holes.
With the semifinals in the rearview, the final is scheduled for 7 a.m. on Saturday in Winchester, where Emmerich and Georgantas will settle the championship in pursuit of their first Mass Amateur title. Their paths to this moment highlight a pair of players who have dedicated themselves to the craft and are ready to etch their names into Mass Golf’s prestigious record book.
“I want it bad,” Georgantas said to Mass Golf. “Just the people and the names that have won this tournament, it would mean a lot to win it and be next to them.”
The 118th Massachusetts Amateur Championship has showcased a blend of seasoned strokes and rising talent, underscoring Massachusetts’ enduring strength in amateur golf. As Emmerich and Georgantas prepare for the final, fans and fellow competitors alike anticipate a compelling capstone to a week that combined weather delays, dramatic comebacks, and a shared sense of pride in the state’s golfing heritage. The winner will join a lineage of champions who have helped shape the Massachusetts amateur scene for decades, a distinction that both finalists will surely chase with fervor as the sun rises in Winchester on Saturday.
