​When Alabama football’s pass protection breaks down in practice, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb sees many of the same faces causing the trouble.The Crimson Tide’s fall camp opened last week, and while a primary offensive focus has been placed on the need for improved run blocking, pass protection for Alabama’s inexperienced quarterbacks can’t be overlooked. Grubb said Devan Thompkins, a transfer from Southern Cal, has been problematic for the UA offensive line, as well as returning edge rusher Yhonzae Pierre.”DT’s been phenomenal as a player. He played out on the edge, he’ll play in the B-gap on you. He’s a really tough player, and versatile,” Grubb said. “Yhonzae, I think the world of him. I think early in camp, I’ve seen Yhonzae take it to another level.”Pierre delivered eight sacks last season, seven of which came against some of the Crimson Tide’s toughest competition. He is expected to be among the SEC’s top pass rushers. Thompkins gives UA a more athletic presence inside, and will likely remain on the field on third downs.Grubb said a couple of the Crimson Tide’s veteran defensive backs have proven themselves as blitzers, as well.”Red Morgan, I think is fantastic off the edge as a nickel.
