Alexander Schlager will be leaving FC Red Bull Salzburg after three years to join SV Werder Bremen. The 30-year-old, a Salzburg native who progressed through the Red Bull Football Academy, returned in the summer of 2023 as the Austrian national team’s goalkeeper. Since his return, he has accumulated 113 appearances for Red Bull Salzburg across the ADMIRAL Bundesliga, the UNIQA ÖFB Cup, the UEFA Champions League, and the UEFA Europa League. His move takes him to Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga.
Alex joined FC Red Bull Salzburg three years ago with a clear goal: to win titles. While that particular objective proved elusive, he consistently demonstrated outstanding professionalism, delivered top-tier performances, and, most importantly, remained a valuable teammate and a Salzburg icon. The transfer to Werder Bremen marks the next chapter in his career as he moves to German football’s top flight. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Alex for his dedication while wearing the FC Red Bull Salzburg jersey and wish him all the best in his new challenge at Werder Bremen, as well as continued success in the future.
Marcus Mann, Managing Director of Sport, commented: I would like to sincerely thank everyone for our time together. Although the last three years haven’t brought the hoped-for on-pitch successes, I had the privilege of fulfilling a childhood dream at my hometown club. The German Bundesliga awaits him, but he will continue to follow FC Red Bull Salzburg’s progress closely and is already looking forward to returning in the future. I wish the club, the team, and everyone involved all the best moving forward.
Alex Schlager’s departure opens a new chapter for both him and the clubs involved. His move to Werder Bremen brings a wealth of experience from Austrian and European competition, including domestic league action and European campaigns, to a club eager to strengthen its squad in the Bundesliga. For Red Bull Salzburg, Schlager’s exit marks the end of an era for a goalkeeper who rose through the academy system, served as a reliable last line of defense, and embodied the values of professionalism and team spirit that have defined the club in recent years.
In reflecting on Schlager’s tenure, it’s clear that his impact extended beyond matchday performances. He contributed to a culture of hard work, consistency, and resilience, and his presence in the squad helped cultivate a strong environment for younger players to learn and grow. As he embarks on this new challenge in Bremen, the club will continue to build on the foundations laid during his time with the team, maintaining a commitment to excellence and a relentless pursuit of success in domestic and European competitions.
Fans and supporters are encouraged to follow Schlager’s progress with Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga and European fixtures, celebrating his accomplishments as he takes on fresh responsibilities in a higher level of competition. FC Red Bull Salzburg remains confident in the future and will continue to support Schlager in his endeavors, while also focusing on the development of other talents within the squad and maintaining the winning mindset that has defined the club’s recent achievements.
With this move, both clubs highlight the dynamic nature of professional football, where players evolve, grow, and pursue new opportunities that challenge them to reach new heights. Alex Schlager’s career with FC Red Bull Salzburg will be remembered for his professional attitude, reliability, and the pride he showed while representing the club. As he begins this new chapter at Werder Bremen, the football community can look forward to seeing how his experience and leadership will influence his teammates and contribute to Werder Bremen’s ambitions in the Bundesliga.
