FEl Paso’s Drew Gonzalez is officially a pro baseball player.Gonzalez officially signed his pro contract with the New York Yankees, one of the most successful organizations in all of pro sports with 27 World Series championships. Gonzalez signed on Wednesday, July 15.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementDetails of Gonzalez’s contract were not immediately available.Gonzalez was selected in the sixth round of the 2026 MLB Draft and was the 189th overall pick on Sunday, July 12, which was the second day of the two-day draft. There were 20 total rounds in the draft.Gonzalez graduated from Americas High School this past June and was the El Paso Times’ All-City MVP.The 6-foot-1, 197-pound Gonzalez hit 13 home runs and drove in 54 runs in 2026 and helped the Trailblazers to the Class 5A, Division 1 regional finals. He played third base and shortstop for Americas. The Athletics are playing in Sacramento, California, before relocatiing to Las Vegas, Nevada.”There was a lot to think about, but my goal is to play in the major leagues one day and I’m forward now with that goal in mind,” Gonzalez said. “I’ll be here in Florida for a couple of months to work out and compete.
