The Portuguese coach has been out of work since his dismissal by Manchester United in January following a difficult 14-month spell in charge. Sources close to the 41-year-old, who previously spent six years at Benfica as a player, making 154 appearances, had earlier ruled out a return to the Portuguese club. Although no deal is yet in place, talks have taken place between Milan and Amorim’s representatives, and he is among the top names being considered to replace Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked in May after failing to secure Champions League qualification. Milan were once nine points clear of fifth place after beating Inter in March, but managed only three wins in their final 10 matches, collecting just 10 points and finishing one point behind Como, who took the last Champions League spot on the final day. USA manager Mauricio Pochettino and Oliver Glasner, who left Crystal Palace after their UEFA Conference League final win over Rayo Vallecano, have also been linked with the position. However, another former Manchester United manager previously mentioned in connection with the job is no longer in contention. Ralf Rangnick, who coached United between 2021 and 2022 before taking over Austria, has extended his contract with the national team until 2028. Should Amorim be appointed, he would come up against his former club in pre-season, as AC Milan are scheduled to face Manchester United in Wroclaw, Poland, on 15 August, a week before the Premier League season starts.
