Amorim apologises for silence towards Man Utd fans

Ruben Amorim has apologized for not addressing Manchester United’s fans since his dismissal in January, but he said he was proud to have served as their coach. The 41-year-old has remained silent since leaving Old Trafford, choosing not to publish any statements about his 14 months at the club on social media. He has now ended his hiatus from coaching by signing a three-year contract with AC Milan and was unveiled by the Serie A side on Wednesday afternoon. However, during a 35-minute media conference, he was not asked to discuss his time at United until the final question. By then, the former Sporting coach had already acknowledged that he had made mistakes at United and that his hunger to succeed was fueled by how his “last adventure” had unfolded. When asked to specify the mistakes, Amorim gave a broad assessment and apologized to United’s fans for not addressing them earlier. “It is hard to explain the mistakes, as I would need to explain all the context of the last adventure,” he said. “The only thing I can say is that I learned a lot and I did some mistakes.” “I didn’t have [the] opportunity—and I am sorry for that—to say something to the Manchester United fans at the moment, but I am really proud to have been their coach for a year. Now it is a different history. There are a lot of things I could have done better in the last experience. But sometimes it is like that. You need to learn to reach a different level. That is my thinking here.” “Everyone learns from their experience. I learned a lot. I did some mistakes. I will try to change, but there are some things you never change. I think I will be better. That is all.” The conference also noted the irony that AC Milan would play Manchester United in their final pre-season match in Poland on August 15. Amorim apologized to the Italian media for not speaking their language yet and answered all questions in English. He sat beside owner Gerry Cardinale, who confirmed his intention to take a hands-on role at the club following a disappointing finish to last season, when Milan earned just seven points from their final eight games and missed out on Champions League qualification. One of Amorim’s initial tasks has been to persuade Luka Modric to stay. The 40-year-old Croatian captain has the option to extend his contract for another year but has yet to commit. “Modric is a player we want to keep for his experience,” Amorim said. “I know the board spoke with Modric, and I spoke to him twice. If I need to, I will go and get the guy. He played really well and is a key point for us, especially at the beginning, to help with possession.” “I am not going to say he will play all the games, but we really want to count on him next season.” For fans seeking the latest Manchester United news, analysis, and fan views, this development marks another chapter in the ongoing story of the club, their former coach, and the intricate web of decisions shaping United’s future under new management and evolving strategies.
