The Oklahoma Sooners head into what could be the most electrifying season of the Brent Venables era. After earning a spot in the College Football Playoff for the first time under Venables last year, Oklahoma is convinced it has the roster capable of chasing a national championship. Much of that confidence centers on the Sooners’ defense, which finished the previous campaign ranked among the nation’s elite in several crucial categories, including total defense and defensive efficiency. A large portion of that success can be traced to Venables returning to the role of defensive play-caller. Before taking the reins as Oklahoma’s head coach, Venables had already established himself as one of college football’s premier defensive minds, contributing to three national championships with both Oklahoma and the Clemson Tigers.
Even though he stepped away from the play-calling duties upon becoming head coach, Venables resumed calling the signals last season. His flair for creative play-calling is precisely why analyst Brooks Austin declared on The Film Guy Network that Venables stands as the sport’s best defensive mind, eclipsing well-known names such as Kirby Smart and Dan Lanning. “I think he’s the best defensive coordinator in the sport,” Austin said. “Brent creates more unique challenges every single week than anyone I study. I flip it on every Sunday and think, you didn’t do that last week. You hadn’t done that all year. Where did you come up with this? And he just installed it on Monday.”
That praise underscores the core quality that has driven Venables’s success throughout his career: the ability to continually evolve. Rather than adhering to the same defensive looks week after week, Venables customizes his game plans to each opponent, forcing offenses to adjust and rethink their approach every Saturday. If Oklahoma’s defense maintains that high level in 2026, the Sooners should once again be in the national championship conversation.
