Analyst urges the Nationals to think about pitching in the draft

If you’ve been following the season, you might be surprised by how the Washington Nationals have performed. With modest expectations entering the year, the Nats have emerged as an entertaining squad to watch. They currently hold a 48-46 record, trailing the division-leading Atlanta Braves by seven games. That gap is sizable, yet it’s a far more favorable position than many anticipated at this point in the season.
A major factor behind Washington’s success is their high-powered offense. They lead the league in runs scored, and with the 11th overall pick in the upcoming draft, they have a real opportunity to add another potent offensive weapon to the lineup. The team has historically leaned toward selecting position players with their first-round picks in recent years. The last time they selected a pitcher in the first round was Cade Cavalli, with the 22nd overall pick in 2020.
With the current pitching prospects roster quite thin, Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer argues that the Nationals should consider drafting a future ace. “This will be Paul Toboni’s first draft as head of the Nationals, so there’s no history to go off of. And as for best guesses, the draft is likely to see a run on hitters when the Nationals are on the board with the No. 11 pick. Still, there’s a non-zero chance of arms like Jackson Flora and prep lefty Gio Rojas being available at that point. Either could be the future No. 1 that the Nationals don’t really have in their system, much less in a dismal major league rotation.”
If Flora is still on the board at No. 11, the Nationals should jump on him, though he’s expected to be the first pitcher off the board. Should he be selected before Washington’s pick, Gio Rojas could offer another compelling option. As a high school lefty, he has the tools to develop into a potential ace, though he might require extra time to advance through the minors.
In other draft-related discussions, analysts have suggested that building around the ballpark could be one of the Nationals’ best moves, while others have warned the Mariners to “go back to the well” with their first-round choice. There’s also talk that the Orioles should consider drafting this particular arm if he’s available with the No. 7 pick. The Cubs, meanwhile, face pressure to maximize the value of the 23rd overall pick to improve their draft results and SEO reach.
