The Los Angeles Angels have had a poorly-rated farm system for years, but things are slowly changing. Former GM Perry Minasian was largely responsible for the Halos’ poor rating as he controlled the farm system for the last five years, but Minasian’s been fired, and interim GM John Mozeliak turned the draft over to the scouting department after years of picking college players who were close to ready to make the jump to Anaheim. The result was…something different. The overhaul in the way the Angels do business will take years, but the team did take a step forward as Baseball America ranked the Angels’ farm system 23rd after years of being in the bottom five. Here are the specifics BA provided as part of this list.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementLos Angeles AngelsPreseason Ranking: 28Top 100 Prospects: RHP Tyler Bremner (No. 35)The strength of the system at this point is positive momentum. That might sound vague, but it’s actually not given how bad some of the Angels’ drafts have been. They’ve put a lot of first-round picks on the field, but the overall depth of the system has been poor, which has been reflected in the Angels ongoing need to go out and sign retread veterans and players with injury histories to minor league deals. The BA staff also added that the Angels have been more deliberate and measured in their approach lately, and it’s paying off with “a growing pack of intriguing pitchers with a few potential everyday position prospects,” with Hayden Alvarez and Juan Flores being mentioned.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementDenzer Guzman was also mentioned as a prospect who’s provided a boost, and Guzman looks like he could be ready to take over at third base. In addition, the Angels have been somewhat successful in developing former New York Yankees prospect Oswald Peraza, although Peraza has been slumping for some time after getting off to a fast start. The weakness of the system is now about positional prospects. The Angels are light on hitting prospects, which is especially noticeable given the failure of infielder Christian Moore to conquer his strikeout problems and find a position. There are a couple of possibilities while the Angels bolster this part of their prospect crop, however. Nelson Rada nearly made the team out of spring training, and Raudi Rodriguez continues to shoot up through the team’s minor league system in a development that’s been quite surprising. Tyler Bremner looks like he might be a top starter, so there are small signs of hope going foward.
