Are Formula 1 Drivers Athletes?

   ​Yes, and it is no longer a serious scientific debate: peer-reviewed research has recorded F1 drivers sustaining heart rates above 90 percent of their maximum for a full race, comparable to elite endurance athletes.Drivers apply up to 160kg of brake pedal pressure, as many as 1,200 times in a single race, while working in a cockpit that can hit 50 degrees Celsius and losing up to 5 percent of their body weight in fluid.Reigning 2025 World Champion Lando Norris has described his own fitness testing as “probably the worst day of the year,” a detail that undercuts the old idea that F1 drivers just sit still and steer.Whether Formula 1 drivers count as athletes used to be a fairly casual argument, the kind settled by pointing at a lap time or a photo of a driver’s forearms. It is not casual anymore. Sports science researchers have spent the past few years actually measuring what a Grand Prix does to the human body, and a 2024 paper in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living argued the doubt itself was the problem, writing that “certain media narratives may have shaped regressive perceptions of athletic identity” around motorsport. Once you look at the data those researchers have gathered, the case is hard to argue with.What the Data Actually ShowsA widely cited definition from Merriam-Webster describes an athlete as someone “trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina.” F1 drivers clear that bar on every measure researchers have tracked.Heart rate is the clearest evidence. A 2023 study published in Science and Sports fitted a competing driver with real-time monitoring and recorded an average of 146±25 beats per minute across a race, around 73 percent of the driver’s maximum, with sustained readings of 148 to 163bpm through the racing phases and a peak of 173bpm at the start. At points, that meant the driver was working at up to 92 percent of their maximum heart rate, a workload that would be considered a serious cardiovascular effort in almost any endurance sport.The physical loads are just as extreme. Braking a Formula 1 car takes up to 160kg of pedal pressure, applied as many as 1,200 times across a race distance, and former driver David Coulthard has described the sensation bluntly: “when you brake at the end of a straight, it feels like a sledgehammer has hit your back.” Under the 2026 technical regulations, cars are lighter and produce meaningfully less downforce than before, so the G-forces drivers experience through a lap have actually come down, typically 2 to 3G, with the hardest braking zones over 2G. That is still a lot to absorb through the neck and core for close to two hours, and it is a long way down from the peaks of the previous generation of cars: Lewis Hamilton was recorded pulling 5.6G through Turn 7 at Mugello in 2020.Then there is the heat. Cockpit temperatures can reach around 50 degrees Celsius, and drivers routinely lose 2 to 4kg of fluid, up to 5 percen
