Argentina fans accused of violence, racism by Egypt, Cape Verde supporters

Sections of Egyptian and Cape Verdean fans have accused their Argentinian counterparts of violent behavior during the last two World Cup matches involving the reigning champions. The allegations, along with at least one notable claim of racism, have placed Argentina’s title defense under fresh scrutiny after two tightly contested knockout games in which lower-ranked opponents nearly toppled Lionel Messi’s side.
On Tuesday in Atlanta, Egypt took a 2-0 lead before Argentina mounted a dramatic late comeback to reach the quarterfinals. The Egyptian supporters’ frustration over their team’s poor start and controversial turnaround spilled over, with footage captured by a spectator showing Argentine fans launching beer toward Egypt’s supporters as the Albiceleste equalized late in the round-of-16 clash. “They’re throwing beer at us,” one fan who filmed the incident in Atlanta said. “We did nothing when we scored. After they equalized, they started attacking us,” he added, while framing the camera toward Argentinians provoking Egypt’s fans.
Additional videos and photos from the stadium circulated online, showing Argentine supporters waving an Israeli flag toward the Egyptian coaching staff as they left the field after the match. Egypt’s head coach Hossam Hassan has been outspoken about the Palestinian crisis, particularly in Gaza, where Israel has waged a war since October 2023. Hassan made headlines by raising the Palestinian flag after Egypt’s round-of-32 victory over Australia last week and later addressed the issue in his pre-match briefing on Monday. “If there is anyone in the world who does not feel for the Palestinian people, then they are not human—whether they are Arab, European, or American,” Hassan stated.
The Atlanta episode is not an isolated incident involving Argentinian fans. Last Friday, a relatively small Cape Verde side gave Argentina a scare in the round-of-32 clash in Miami, pulling off two impressive goals to unsettle the largely Argentinian crowd at Miami Stadium. Following Argentina’s triumph over Cape Verde, Cape Verdean supporters told Al Jazeera that some Argentinian fans threw beer bottles toward them after every goal scored by their team. “We were a much smaller group of fans than them, and they attacked us with bottles after every goal,” one Cape Verdean supporter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Al Jazeera outside the stadium on Friday.
With Argentina advancing to the quarterfinals, where they are set to meet Switzerland at Kansas City Stadium on Saturday, the situation has sparked renewed debate about sportsmanship and fan conduct. The ongoing narrative surrounding Argentina’s World Cup campaign—touched by competitive drama and episodes of provocations and tensions—illustrates how the tournament’s high-stakes atmosphere can provoke intense reactions and ethical questions that extend beyond the pitch.
