Argentina icon backs Julian Alvarez to join Barcelona: ‘The ideal team for him.’ Former Barcelona forward Javier Saviola believes the Catalan club would be the perfect destination for Julián Álvarez, arguing that the Argentine striker’s versatility and intelligence make him a natural fit for Hansi Flick’s system. Speaking on Catalunya Radio’s Tot gira programme, Saviola also analyzed Álvarez’s playing style and explained why he thinks the Atlético Madrid forward could reach an even higher level surrounded by Barcelona’s talented squad.
Saviola described Álvarez as more than a typical lethal goalscorer, calling him a very complete player who can operate on the wing, as an attacking midfielder, or as a deep-lying playmaker. “You don’t just see the goalscorer; you also see that he’s technically very good,” he noted, leaving little doubt about his view of the forward’s future.
For Saviola, Barcelona’s style would enable Álvarez to express every facet of his game rather than being judged solely on goals. He stated that Barça is the ideal team because it would allow him to contribute more in the build-up and be surrounded by high-quality teammates, resulting in a higher level of performance.
Saviola also argued that Barcelona’s possession-based approach would help Álvarez become even more influential and stressed that he should not be viewed merely as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski. According to him, the two players have different strengths: Lewandowski is a classic penalty-box striker who thrives on finishing, while Álvarez is more mobile and involved in the team’s overall play.
When it comes to Álvarez’s best role, Saviola pointed to an attacking-midfield position. He described him as very intelligent, decisive, and a complete player who accelerates, turns quickly, and controls the ball well in that role. Although preferring him as an attacking midfielder, Saviola believes Álvarez can perform equally well as a false nine, which further explains why he is so sought after by managers.
