​Arizona football is just about finished with training camp, and most eyes are turning towards the season opener against NAU on September 5. For the Wildcats offense, most things are ready to go and Seth Doege is feeling confident heading into year two.Of course, it helps when you have a returning Heisman candidate quarterback in Noah Fifita, but the pieces around him are looking the part. From the veterans to the young guys, almost every position group on offense has good depth.However, it is always nice to have emergency plans if things were to take a turn for the worse, and it’s even better when you have complete confidence in those who would have to step up if called into action.Anderson named QB2Doege has that confidence not only in his backups but also has it for the young guys that might not play as much but can still be playmakers.No one wants to think about the possibility of Fifita having to come out for any reason, but if he does there needs to be a quarterback ready to go. Doege has decided on the guy who will be behind Fifita on the depth chart with sophomore Sawyer Anderson being named the backup quarterback.Anderson did not see the field during his freshman year with junior Mason Bray being the only returning quarterback to see the field last season. However, Doege credited Anderson’s work through the offseason as to why he got the nod to be the backup this season.“He’s had a tremendous camp,” said Doege. “I think what kind of separated him was the explosive plays. He just had way more explosives than the rest of them and I’m really proud of him, especially where he’s had his development because he’s still a young player.”Anderson’s ability to make plays while being on the run was also what separated him from the rest of the pack. Throwing on the run, navigating the pocket, and overall mobility can make him a threat if he has to enter any game this season.“I think the mobility part gives him another dimension to his game,” said Doege. “His ability to throw off platform and create outside the pocket’s been, he’s made a couple throws this camp that just are like, whoa, that’s that’s super impressive, and that’s only that’s unique to him.”The belief Doege has not only in Anderson but in all of his quarterbacks is what made the backup competition as intense as it could be. He believes that all of his quarterbacks could go in and do a serviceable job, but Anderson separated himself by the end of camp.“It’s part of the reason why I didn’t bring a transfer in,” he said. “I believe in those young guys, and I knew one of them was going to separate himself.”Young receivers shiningHaving reliable veteran receivers for Fifita to throw to is what will help this offense operate at a very fast pace this season. Having a strong rotation of receivers will make Arizona a constant threat through the air, which is why having young players showing they are made for the moment is important.Isaiah Mize
