Arsenal have secured the services of Ona Batlle from Barcelona, a 27-year-old defender who represents yet another major recruitment for a squad that has already been bolstered by a number of players in their prime. In announcing the deal, Batlle expressed her enthusiasm: “I’m very happy and excited to get going. Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I can’t wait to feel the joy of playing in front of our supporters at Emirates Stadium alongside so many great players. I want to win trophies and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.”
Batlle’s trophy cabinet with Barcelona is impressive. Over the past three years, she has captured three Spanish league titles, three Spanish Cups, three Spanish Super Cups, and two UEFA Champions League titles. On the international stage, she was a fixture for Spain as they lifted the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, and she helped the team triumph in back-to-back UEFA Women’s Nations League campaigns in 2023/24 and 2024/25. Her accomplishments earned her selection in The Best FIFA Women’s 11 in 2024 and 2025, as well as the FIFPRO Women’s World 11 in 2025.
Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley commented: “Ona’s track record at both club and international level speaks for itself – she’s a proven winner with a hunger to add more trophies. We’re delighted to bring one of the best defenders in the world to Arsenal, and I know our supporters will make her feel welcome straight away.” Head Coach Renée Slegers added: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring Ona to the club. She’s a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes. She’s a winner and we want to go for more wins together.”
The big question now is where Batlle fits in within the squad. She is regarded as a world-class right back, yet Arsenal already boast another top-tier option in that position in Emily Fox, who might consider a move back to the NWSL at some point. Then there is Smilla Holmberg, the young Sweden international who may offer even more going forward, as well as academy product Sophie Harwood, who has recently been offered her first professional contract. Four right backs would be a substantial number for any squad, especially with Taylor Hinds being the only natural left back. This suggests a potential reshuffle, with either Fox or Batlle moving to a different role on the right, while Harwood could be loaned out to gain first-team experience.
The balance the coach and planning staff may be aiming for could be Batlle and Holmberg contending for the right-back slot, with Hinds and Fox contesting on the left. There is also the possibility that Batlle has been signed to fill a left-back vacancy created by Katie McCabe’s departure. Batlle will add depth and quality across the defensive line and is set to wear the No. 22 shirt. The move is framed as a strategic step in Arsenal’s broader effort to maintain competitiveness on all fronts, leveraging Batlle’s winning mentality and experience at the highest level.
