Arsenal sign Spain defender Batlle on free transfer

Arsenal have secured the services of Spain international Ona Batlle on a free transfer following her departure from Barcelona. It is understood she has signed a four-year deal, with an option to extend for a further year. The 27-year-old, widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in the world, left Barcelona after helping them lift the Champions League trophy in May. In her three years in Spain, Batlle made 114 appearances as Barcelona claimed three consecutive league titles and two European cups. She even started in their 2025 Champions League final defeat to Arsenal.
“I believe Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I can’t wait to experience the joy of playing in front of our supporters at Emirates Stadium alongside so many great players,” Batlle said. “I want to win trophies, and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.”
Batlle came through Barcelona’s academy before making her senior debut with Madrid CFF in 2017. She then gained regular first-team football with Levante before joining Manchester United in 2020. The defender went on to make 77 appearances for United before returning to Barcelona as an established Spain international. Batlle has earned 76 caps for Spain and was part of the squad that won the World Cup in 2023 and reached the Euros final in 2025, finishing runners-up to England. She was named in the FIFA Best XI in 2024 and 2025, and it is believed she had a pre-contract agreement to join Arsenal earlier in the year.
“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring Ona to the club,” Arsenal manager Renee Slegers said. “She’s a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and excellent physical attributes. She’s a winner, and we want to achieve more wins together.”
Arsenal’s director of women’s football, Clare Wheatley, added: “Ona’s track record at both club and international level speaks for itself. She’s a proven winner with a hunger to add more trophies. We’re thrilled to bring one of the best defenders in the world to Arsenal.” Batlle will wear the number 22 shirt.
Arsenal also announced the signings of Switzerland midfielder Reuteler and other planned moves, continuing a strategy of rebuilding with high-calibre players. From Barcelona to Bromley: Inside Putellas’ move to LCL, and the club’s addition of Germany striker Cerci on a free, have been part of a broader wave of activity. The Gunners were disappointed not to mount a stronger challenge for the Women’s Super League title last season despite winning the Champions League in 2025. The club has entered a transitional period, with several big-name players departing as their contracts drew to a close, including Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe and England international Beth Mead. In response, Arsenal has moved decisively, securing England midfielder Georgia Stanway and Batlle on pre-contract agreements earlier in the year.
While attention has been on other signings for better SEO, the focus remains on how Batlle’s arrival might shape Arsenal’s pursuit of domestic and European glory. The balance of youth and experience in the squad, combined with Batlle’s proven excellence at the highest level, suggests a bold statement of intent from the club as they retool for future campaigns.
