Martin Odegaard has become the latest Norway player to contract a cold-like illness ahead of Saturday’s World Cup showdown with England. The illness is sweeping through the Norway camp, with Odegaard in particular affected, though his uncle and national team physio Thomas Odegaard has reportedly been hit hardest by the symptoms. Another member of the training staff is also unwell, while right-back Marcus Holmgren Pedersen, who missed Norway’s victory over Brazil due to illness, has returned to training. At the moment, it isn’t clear whether Odegaard will be able to participate against England this weekend. Norway’s match against England is set for 11 July, kicking off at 10pm UK time.
Before the game, Odegaard was asked about any chats he’s had with his Arsenal teammates who are now in England’s camp during the World Cup. He replied that he’s spoken to a few of them briefly during the tournament, and he acknowledged England’s quality. “I know them really well. Outstanding, world-class players, representing one of the best national teams in the world. It’s going to be a big test for us. Brazil showed it’s possible for underdogs to challenge big sides; anything can happen in football. We’ll give it our best effort and see how far we can go, and we’re looking forward to it.”
Odegaard also spoke highly of Declan Rice, praising his long-standing excellence. “Playing with him, you can see all his qualities, and it’s a privilege to share the pitch with someone who has achieved so much for so long. What he’s been doing is incredible. I’m eager for the challenge and to see the rest of them.” Odegaard added that Rice “always gives everything for the team, fights for every ball, and brings energy to the pitch and the squad, driving the team forward. He can defend, attack, physicality, and ball-handling—he’s a very complete player. It will be a strong test for all of us. And it’s not just about Declan; the entire England squad features unbelievable talent. We’re hopeful we can make more history.”
Norway head coach Stale Solbakken commented on Odegaard’s role, suggesting the midfielder carries substantial responsibility at Arsenal as well. “I don’t think the situation is very different. Arsenal and Mikel Arteta use him in the same way we do. When do we press in a 4-1-4-1? When do we push higher for a 4-4-2?” Solbakken, 58, explained. “He is one of the key figures, both as captain and as a leader in our team. He anchors the defense much as he does in the Premier League. He perhaps has a little more freedom in our system.”
