As it was, so it shall be again: Phillies 4, Tigers 2

Christopher Sanchez had a rough turn in Kansas City the other day, and the Royals capitalized, chalking up a convincing beatdown largely due to Hernandez’s hitters exploiting a repeated over-the-middle location. While pitch tipping was cited as a major factor, the underlying truth is simple: his stuff wasn’t sharp, and hitters were able to sit on middle-of-the-plate offerings. Fast forward to tonight against Detroit, and Sanchez looked more like the pitcher who could earn another home start in the upcoming All-Star week. The Phillies won, and with Sunday’s game pitting Zack Wheeler against Detroit, Philadelphia has a chance to stack another series victory.
The scoring began in the third inning when Derek Hill reached on an error, swiped two bags, and scored on a sacrifice fly to hand Detroit an early lead. Hill then made a superb, game-changing centerfield play in the bottom of the inning to rob a would-be RBI double, preserving the Tigers’ slender advantage. In the fourth, Brandon Marsh drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a one-out Bryson Stott single, and J.T. Realmuto followed with a double that plated both runners to push the Phillies ahead 3-0. Hill knocked in Realmuto with a single, extending the cushion to 4-0. From that point, Sanchez regained his form and cruised, managing a solo homer by Eduardo Valentin in the fifth—Valentin appears to be heating up at the plate—but Detroit could muster little else.
After that hiccup, Sanchez settled back in, dominating as the game progressed. The seventh and eighth innings brought intermittent tension, but Sanchez’s execution steadied the ship. The eighth inning became slightly tense when Sanchez was recalled to start the frame and quickly allowed two baserunners before being relieved by Jonathan Bowlan. Bowlan faced loaded bases with no one out after hitting Dillon Dingler with the first pitch, yet he induced a pivotal grounder from Spencer Torkelson into a double play, effectively quelling the threat, even though a run scored. Bowlan finished the inning, and then Jhoan Duran closed things out in the ninth without much drama.
Seeing Sanchez struggle earlier this week was jarring, yet tonight’s performance underscored why he remains a legitimate Cy Young contender in the eyes of many observers. He kept Detroit guessing, recovered his rhythm, and neutralized the Tigers’ offense with his trademark mix of movement and precision. It was a compelling reminder of the pitcher’s ceiling: when he’s on, he disrupts hitters, keeps his defense engaged, and turns the tide of games with his command and deception. Watching him regain that form was a treat for Phillies fans and a strong signal that he can still be a dominant presence on the mound when correctly locating his pitches.
In sum, this outing reinforced why Sanchez is widely viewed as one of the top-caliber arms in the league. His ability to rebound from an off-night, keep hitters off balance, and finish strong is exactly the sort of performance that fuels playoff hopes and keeps him in the national conversation for elite awards. The combination of late-inning resilience, improved command, and a steady, effective attack against Detroit’s lineup made for a highly satisfying win and a vindicating reminder of his potential at the highest levels. This is the kind of night that adds weight to the argument that Sanchez remains among the favorites in the Cy Young race, a prospect Phillies fans hope to see more of as the season unfolds.
