ASK IRA: Why the NBA double-standard with Kawhi and Heat/Rozier?

By admin — In News — September 3, 2026

Q: Ira, the NBA hit the Clippers for five first-round picks for lying about Kawhi Leonard’s secret deals, and the Heat only got a second-round pick for the Hornets lying about Terry Rozier already having been under gambling investigation. A novel idea: Give the Heat one of the Clippers’ forfeited picks. – Michael.A: I am sure the NBA would amply cite the significant differences between the Clippers’ salary-cap circumvention with Kawhi Leonard and the Hornets not making the Heat fully aware of Terry Rozier having been under gambling investigation prior to his January 2024 trade to the Heat. Then again, the NBA also was a party to that process, also not making the Heat fully aware of that Rozier investigation. Your solution is creative. In a perfect world, the Heat get back the first-round pick still due to the Hornets in 2027 or ’28, perhaps with the Hornets getting one of the forfeited Clippers’ picks. The reality, of course, is the NBA and Adam Silver can’t make all of this go away fast enough. And the bottom line is it has been case closed (except, of course, for the federal gambling case) regarding Rozier for months now. So Ryan Conwell it is – and all it is.Related Articles Submit your “Ask Ira” question here! Q: Thoughts on Kawhi?  – Bruce.A: As mentioned above, when the NBA wants to take action and make a statement, it takes action and makes a statement. When it wants something to go away, it quietly issues a media release about a second-round pick and closes the book. In other words: Salary-cap circumvention? Very bad. Failure to inform of legal messes? Look the other way and then the type of settlement that hardly moves any needle.Q: Nice column on Keshad Johnson. I would always prefer to have a player who wants to be here. – Adam.A: And that Keshad Johnson does. And the Heat certainly have made clear that they like having him around. But, again, there are no guarantees with two-way players, and it is the Heat’s job to construct the best possible roster, with sentiment somewhat put aside. All of that said, it would seem as if Vlad Goldin would be the two-way player facing the greatest challenges, considering the Heat now have added Nick Richards to the standard roster.
