​Aston Villa don’t need to be pretty at Tottenham – they just need to winThere is always something about playing a team that hasn’t won yet that makes me nervous, because you know at some point that run is going to end and we have all watched football for long enough to automatically assume we will be the team that helps somebody out.Tottenham haven’t scored a Premier League goal yet, they haven’t won a league game and they’ve now gone out of the Carabao Cup as well, so on the face of it you would probably say this is a good time to play them. The Villa supporter in me looks at it slightly differently because I don’t particularly want to be the team turning up just as everything finally clicks for them, although the more I look at the game, the more I think Villa have to see their situation as a massive opportunity.Spurs have spent a lot of money and bought some very good footballers, but I don’t think they know what their best team is yet and there has been so much change there that you wouldn’t really expect them to. They are still trying to find their way under Roberto De Zerbi and for all the money that has been spent, they still look like a team that can be got at.Obviously the same can be said about Villa to an extent. We haven’t won in the Premier League either, we’ve only scored once and Unai Emery is still trying to put together a team containing players who have barely had any time working together, so this isn’t me pretending everything is rosy at Villa while Tottenham are in a mess. I just think there is an opportunity there if Villa are clever enough to take it.The first goal could be massive because if Villa can get themselves in front, I think the atmosphere will change very quickly. Tottenham supporters came into this season with expectations after everything they did during the summer and they won’t want to watch another game where their team has lots of the ball without really doing anything with it. The longer that goes on, the more frustration there will be around the stadium and Villa need to try to use that. Their home form has been a massive issue for 18 months now.That doesn’t mean Villa should be flying forward from the first minute and turning it into a basketball match because I don’t think Emery will see it that way at all. In fact, I can quite easily see Villa allowing Tottenham to have plenty of the ball.Possession is only useful if you actually do something with it and from what I’ve seen of Spurs so far, there have been periods where they have controlled the ball without ever really looking like scoring. If they want to have it in areas that don’t hurt Villa, I’m not particularly bothered. Emery certainly won’t be.We know what he is like away from home, he’d done it at Spurs before. Emery is quite happy for the opposition to have the ball, he will want Villa to stay in the game and he will wait for the opportunities to attack when they arrive.
