After weathering a setback from a disappointing run of untimely double-faults, Coco Gauff fought back to oust Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and reach the semifinals at Wimbledon for the first time in her career. The 22-year-old Gauff became the youngest player to advance to the semifinals at all four Grand Slam tournaments since Maria Sharapova accomplished the same feat at the 2007 French Open, according to the WTA Tour.
Gauff will take on 10th-seeded Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic for a spot in Saturday’s final. Muchova, who finished as the runner-up at the 2023 French Open, defeated Naomi Osaka 7-6(4), 6-4 to reach the semifinals.
In what marked Gauff’s sixth appearance at the All England Club, she had previously never progressed beyond the fourth round. “After seven years playing this tournament it’s finally the first time I can walk on Centre Court and I didn’t feel nervous,” Gauff said.
As the men’s quarterfinals continued, second-seeded Alexander Zverev completed his match against Jiri Lehecka, winning 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(6) to set up a Wednesday showdown against sixth-seeded Taylor Fritz. The completion of that fourth-round match added another chapter to a Wimbledon crowd that’s been treated to a mix of suspense and high-quality tennis.
