Atlanta Braves Emerge as Favorite to Land Cy Young Contender in New MLB Trade Rumor

A fresh rumor suggests the Atlanta Braves have begun preliminary discussions about a bold move for one of MLB’s premier pitchers in 2026. Despite weathering a season filled with injuries to their pitching staff, the Braves have stood out as the cream of the crop in the National League East. Going into their Thursday matchup with the Pittsburgh Pirates, they sport a 53-38 record and sit atop the division.
Meanwhile, after parting ways with their manager earlier in the season, the Philadelphia Phillies have gradually closed the gap on Atlanta and sit just three games back. The Miami Marlins are also showing signs that they might be legitimate contenders this year, keeping pace at three games behind in the standings. All of this points to a summer-long battle for the NL East crown.
To protect their lead, the Braves will need to bolster their roster, with a particular focus on upgrading the starting rotation. In a report from The Athletic, insiders Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon note that Atlanta has already had early conversations about pursuing a Cy Young-worthy arm. “The Atlanta Braves are one of several rotation-needy teams expressing interest in Boston Red Sox starter Sonny Gray, according to people familiar with the situation who were not authorized to speak freely on the topic,” Rosenthal and Sammon wrote.
As the MLB insiders indicate, Atlanta isn’t alone in seeking a rotation boost, but they could hold an edge in talks. Rosenthal and Sammon emphasize that Gray, a 36-year-old veteran, carries a full no-trade clause, yet his living in Nashville—about a four-hour drive from Atlanta—appears to make the idea of him playing in Atlanta more palatable for him.
One major hurdle remains, however. Internally, the Red Sox are hopeful they can still chase a postseason spot, which means they might not be inclined to part with Gray before the trade deadline. Gray is enjoying a standout year in his 14th season, currently posting a 10-1 record with a 2.61 ERA and a 1.014 WHIP, having walked just 23 batters in 89.2 innings in 2026.
