​USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConnectIt’s been a nightmare start to Michigan’s football season, but could the worst be yet to come?Printed on t-shirts, sweatshirts and bumper stickers for the past four years, the message has been clear: “Michigan vs Everybody.”And after Wolverines’ last-second win over Western Michigan in the season opener, it seemed like “Everybody” was dumping on college football’s winningest program.Now Michigan is coming off its first official loss of the season after Iowa’s last-second touchdown pass in the Big House Saturday left the Wolverine nation stunned, reeling and looking under the bed for anybody.The result, Michigan fell completely out of the Associated Press Top 25 poll and clung to No. 24 in the AFCA Coaches Poll this week.Michigan’s Problems CompoundWith the loss, many people insist on viewing Michigan as 2-2 team rather than its actual 3-1 record. The Wolverines have eight games remaining on their regular-season schedule and they may have to win them all — and the Big Ten title — to reach the College Football Playoffs.If Michigan slips again, and finishes 10-2 without reaching the conference title game, a plethora of onlookers will view the Maize and Blue as 9-3 and not worthy of a postseason berth.Three-loss teams were viewed as longshots or having no chance of making the College Football Playoffs under the 12-team format until Alabama seized an at-large berth this past season.Three-loss Clemson reached the CFP in 2024, but all the Tigers’ losses came in the regular season, and they won an automatic berth after winning the ACC conference title.If Michigan gets hot and finishes 10-2, or 9-3, without winning the conference title or reaching the title game, its fate falls squarely into the hands of the CFP Selection Committee members.This year, a batch of new faces joined the Committee, including former Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio, who is not exactly known for being Michigan’s biggest fan.Dantonio, a College Football Hall of Fame member, was born in Ohio and was a defensive coordinator at Ohio State, serving two stints, one for Earl Bruce and the second under Jim Tressel.CFP committee members are chosen based on their knowledge of the game, objectivity, principles and ethics.Over the course of 13 seasons at MSU, a long Dantonio-Michigan feud reached a boiling point on several occasions, which may now leave many Michigan fans wondering if the Wolverines would get a fair shake in the committee room come December.The feud began to grab national attention in 2007 when Michigan topped MSU 28-24 and Michigan running back Mike Hart referred to the Spartans as “little brother” during his postgame interview. “Sometimes you get your little brother excited when you’re playing basketball and stuff, let them get the lead, and then you just come back and take it back,” Hart said.Also serving on the CFP Selection Committee are: Arkansas AD and Chairperson Hunter Yurachek, Athleti
