Austin Reaves’ new Lakers contract is now official

For months, speculation swirled around Austin Reaves’ summer plans, with many predicting he would opt out of his current deal to test free agency. Although the general consensus pointed toward a return to the Los Angeles Lakers, there was lingering worry that he might depart for another franchise or, alternatively, sign a Lakers contract that could be deemed excessive relative to his value. On June 24, Reaves put those concerns to rest by agreeing to a four-year, $185 million contract to remain with the Lakers. The sum is substantial, yet it was still somewhat below the maximum offer he could have commanded, and the agreement was finalized this past Sunday.
General manager Rob Pelinka issued a statement highlighting what Reaves brings to the organization and what his future means for the team. “Austin’s relentless pursuit of improvement, fierce competitiveness, and commitment to winning have made him an integral part of our organization,” Pelinka said. “From the moment he joined the Lakers, Austin has embodied the work ethic and selfless approach that define our culture. We’re thrilled to continue building with him as a cornerstone of our team as we pursue our championship goals.”
Reaves’ ascent is a quintessential NBA rags-to-riches story. Born in Newark, Arkansas, a town with just over 1,000 residents, he began his college career at Wichita State University before transferring to the University of Oklahoma. Undrafted in 2021, he nonetheless emerged quickly as a standout talent, and his production has climbed in each season since his rookie year.
Last season, Reaves posted impressive numbers, averaging 23.3 points and 5.5 assists per game, while shooting 49% from the floor and 36% from three-point range. He has established himself as the Lakers’ second scoring option, and with LeBron James no longer on the roster, there is potential for his scoring average to rise even further in the upcoming season.
The four-year, $185 million deal represents the largest contract ever signed by an undrafted NBA player, underscoring Reaves’ rapid development and the Lakers’ belief in his long-term impact. This contract solidifies his status as a central figure for Los Angeles as the franchise looks to maintain momentum in its championship pursuit.
