MIAMI — For the second time in a week, Miami Heat captain Bam Adebayo on Sunday gave back to the community. But this appearance was a bit different than Tuesday’s back-to-school giveaway. This time, at his youth camp at Slam Miami, it also meant receiving the 2026 NBA Social Justice Champion award, with the ceremony including a video message from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, for whom the award’s trophy is named. With his mother, Marilyn Blount, and members of his foundation alongside, Adebayo offered thanks for being able to give back.“It’s always somebody out there that needs help,” he said. “And if you’re willing to go find it, you’re going to go find those people to help. And I feel like that’s how you do it in the community. You find different ways to impact the community. And I have and will continue doing that.”The relaxed nature of the moment had Adebayo at ease when addressing questions about the Heat’s upcoming season, with the start of training camp less than two months away.He opened his comments by again addressing the team’s addition of Giannis Antetokounmpo.“Being able to have that shift and that change, we’re looking for growth,” he said of the Heat landing such a superstar talent. ‘We’re ready to get to work. The goal is to win a championship. And that’s his mindset. We have a like mindset when it comes to that. So those conversations are really about winning.”With the additions of 30-somethings such as Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis and Tim Hardaway Jr., Adebayo acknowledged that his leadership style might have to change.“The thing about leadership is when you want to impact somebody, you meet them in the middle,” he said. “So obviously I’m going to meet guys where they are and we’ll go from there.“Obviously it is different because you’re going from trying to teach somebody the game of basketball in the NBA terms, and now you’ve got vets who’ve been around in the league. So I feel like it’ll be easier conversations, I feel like we’ll get to the points a lot quicker.”With three Heat open roster spots, Adebayo said he, too, is an interested party to the work remaining.“It’s exciting,” he said. “Like I said, there’s an excitement around this season.Going into this season, we want to have excitement. We want to have something to look forward to. We feel like we have a chance, and we’re going to go for it.”Of concerns the roster still might be lacking, especially with the decision a week ago of LeBron James to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers instead of the Heat, Adebayo said there is no reason to stress.“We’ll figure it out,” he said. “We don’t really worry about the outside noise too much. We’ve done a lot more with less.”Already having returned to work at Kaseya Center, Adebayo also addressed his work with slimmed-down point guard Davion Mitchell.“Man, Davion’s not fat anymore,” Adebayo said with a wide grin. “You know, he’s not fat anymore.
