The NBA Summer League is underway in Las Vegas, Nevada, bringing together rookies and established stars who are soaking in the action around the city. Among the participants are several former Kentucky Wildcats who are sprinkled throughout the rosters, with some in town for the weekend. A few of these former Wildcats found themselves at the center of a heated moment when tensions flared between Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro.
ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania reported that Adebayo and Herro were involved in a physical altercation on Friday morning, during which Adebayo struck Herro. The incident unfolded on a practice court at a Las Vegas hotel, sparked when Adebayo confronted Herro over social media comments in which the former Wildcats guard criticized Adebayo’s performance. The confrontation quickly escalated, leading to Adebayo punching Herro, according to Charania.
Further details about the incident come from The Athletic, which cited multiple anonymous witnesses who described the scene. The accounts indicate that Adebayo walked onto the court and Herro said something to him. In response, Adebayo approached and punched Herro without hesitation. Herro’s AAU coach confronted Adebayo, and Herro, visibly upset, yelled at his former teammate while security personnel escorted them away. Both players ultimately left the scene on their own accord.
The two Wildcats, who later became Heat teammates, shared a solid friendship and strong chemistry during their time in Miami. In a previous interview, Herro had asked Adebayo who among their teammates would always have his back in a fight. Adebayo replied, citing their long-standing relationship: “I’m going to say Tyler (Herro) just because we’ve got the longest relationship.”
As the league moves forward, fans will surely hope these two former Kentucky stars can mend fences and return to a positive, teammate-friendly dynamic. The incident adds another layer to the narratives surrounding the Summer League, highlighting the intense competitiveness that both connects and sometimes strains even the closest of relationships. For now, both players remain a focal point of discussion as observers watch how their on-court interactions and off-court rapport evolve in the wake of this weekend’s events.
