Barcelona sporting director Deco is currently in New York with club president Joan Laporta and advisor Alejandro Echevarria as the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina approaches on Sunday. After watching Spain’s semi-final triumph in Dallas earlier in the week, Deco believes the tournament has delivered what could be the perfect championship match and anticipates an unforgettable showdown.
In an interview conducted with Cadena COPE from New York and cited by Mundo Deportivo, the former Barcelona midfielder described the final as the ideal way to crown the world champions. “I think so,” Deco said. “Spain looked very strong after the semi-final, Argentina have found ways to win throughout the tournament, and Leo has been spectacular. That’s why I believe we’re going to see a fantastic final.”
Deco emphasized the quality on display on both sides but stopped short of naming a favorite. “Both teams have outstanding players. Spain are playing very well, while Argentina have had to manage difficult moments, yet they possess that fighting spirit that keeps them alive,” he noted.
When asked which side he would back, Deco avoided making a definitive choice but expressed immense admiration for Lionel Messi. The two shared a dressing room during their time together at Barcelona, and Deco acknowledged it would be impossible not to appreciate what the Argentine maestro continues to achieve. “I’ll always support my own people, but my people are everywhere,” he explained. “Leo will always be one of ours. Beyond being a friend, he’s given everything to Barcelona and to football. He’s a true legend.”
Messi has enjoyed another outstanding World Cup, contributing eight goals and four assists as Argentina progressed to the final. While praising Messi, Deco also highlighted the substantial Barcelona influence among Spain’s squad. “On one side there’s Leo, and on the other there are our young Barça players. It’s not easy to choose. That’s why we’ll simply enjoy the match. I think it’s going to be a spectacular final.”
Following the World Cup, Deco is expected to return to Barcelona to oversee Karim Adeyemi’s official presentation and to continue shaping Hansi Flick’s squad ahead of the new season. His return signals Barcelona’s ongoing push to integrate young talent and reinforce the team’s strategic plans as they look toward the next campaign. The emphasis remains on leveraging the club’s strong Academy output and the evolving dynamics of the first team to maintain competitive momentum across domestic and international competitions.
