Barcelona wanted to sign Manchester City star Josko GvardiolBarcelona explored a move to sign Josko Gvardiol from Manchester City this summer, per Mondo Deportivo. The Blaugrana identified the 24-year-old as an ideal signing to strengthen their backline.Barcelona were particularly attracted by his ability to play both as a centre-back and a left-back.They also admired his physicality, defensive resilience and composure when bringing the ball out from the back. However, Gvardiol had no desire to leave City who also regarded him as an untouchable asset. The Croatian ended speculation over his future in Manchester by signing a new contract until 2031 in July.Gvardiol joined Man City from RB Leipzig in 2023 for a fee around £77.6 million. He established himself as an important first-team member under former manager Pep Guardiola.Gvardiol’s position has not changed after Enzo Maresca’s appointment as head coach. The left-back has started all five Premier League matches this season, with three direct goal contributions to his name.Barcelona invested heavily to bring in the likes of Anthony Gordon, Rodri, Karim Adeyemi and Gabriel Jesus in the summer. They also needed reinforcement in defence after Ronald Araujo left the club to join Liverpool on loan. After failing to land Gvardiol, the La Liga giants also explored deals for Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni but a transfer did not materialise.
