Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson has endured an incredibly challenging 12 months, beginning with a groin injury that disrupted the majority of the 2025-26 season and culminating in his cautious, but promising, return to form. After a summer plagued by pain and rehab, Johnson is finally looking and feeling closer to the elite player he has shown himself to be in the past, and the optimism around his health is rising as he moves forward.
A year ago, the Bears stood on the doorstep of training camp, preparing for Ben Johnson’s first season as head coach and the usual grind of a summer that would set the tone for the year. For Johnson, that period marked the start of a frustrating stretch. During the break before camp, a groin injury sidelined him for the entire training camp. He nonetheless fought back to suit up in Week 2 of the regular season, only to find that his return exacerbated the issue, ultimately necessitating surgery and keeping him out for nine games.
Johnson returned in Week 13 and finished the season on the field, but the performance he displayed was far from his peak, and certainly not at the Pro Bowl level he had reached in earlier seasons. Still, signs of progress were visible, and the trajectory began to trend upward as the offseason unfolded.
This spring brought renewed hope. It surprised many observers to see Johnson participate in voluntary organized team activities alongside his teammates, signaling that he had taken a meaningful step forward. By the end of mandatory minicamp, his playmaking ability resurfaced, hinting at the return of the player capable of impacting games the way he did before the injuries.
When asked whether Johnson was “back to himself,” Bears head coach offered a candid assessment laced with measured optimism. “I don’t know that I ever saw ‘himself’,” he said, “so it’s hard for me to gauge that, particularly this time of year. But I think he had a good day out there. He’s been able to stack a few of those throughout the OTAs. I think his mind is probably getting more confident in terms of the movements he’s making. So yeah, he’s a vital part of what we want to do. You know he’s been a Pro Bowl-caliber player in the past, and hopefully we can get that out of him again this year.” Hidden in that response was a clear challenge: Johnson needed to demonstrate full confidence in his movements and in his body. The latest updates coming into training camp have begun to answer that call.
Earlier in the week, a rehab specialist posted a video of Johnson training on Instagram with the caption “We back ⚡️100%,” a strong public signal that his confidence has returned and that his functional movement is improving. The video underscored the progress he has made and reinforced the belief that he can again play at a high level.
Johnson’s absence from last season’s training camp was notable. It meant a late start for a team already tasked with preparing for a demanding season, and the loss of valuable reps during a critical period of conditioning and team integration was visible. Yet the improvement he’s shown in the spring hints at a player who is not only healthy but also reinvigorated and focused on reclaiming the form that made him a standout cornerback.
As the Bears head into training camp, the hope is that Johnson’s progress continues and that he can recapture the edge that defined his earlier seasons. His path back has been anything but straightforward, marked by setbacks, surgeries, and a lengthy rehabilitation. Still, the current trajectory points toward a return to the high level of play that once made him a Pro Bowl-caliber presence on the Bears’ defense. If Johnson maintains his health and confidence, he could again be a cornerstone of Chicago’s secondary and a pivotal contributor to the team’s defensive success this season.
