Belgium star’s club bars him from World Cup quarterfinal participation hours before game

Belgium’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup quarterfinal clash with Spain have been severely disrupted by a club-versus-country row, just hours before the match. Zeno Debast, the young Belgian defender, has been prohibited from playing for the Red Devils by his club, Sporting Lisbon, casting doubt over his participation despite his readiness and the team’s hopes. Debast has not yet taken the field for Belgium in this tournament, and the latest developments suggest that he may be unavailable for the quarterfinal regardless of the desire of his coaches and teammates to have him on the pitch. Sporting reportedly have concerns about his physical condition.
Before the World Cup, Debast sustained a thigh injury in May while with Sporting. Although he received a national team call-up, the Belgian Football Association confirmed that he would be ruled out of action, at least temporarily, according to The Mirror. A spokesperson for the Royal Belgian Football Association explained the situation: Zeno Debast will not be available for the quarterfinal. His club, Sporting CP, has told the player they do not deem him medically fit to take part in matches. This assessment differs from the evaluations of the Red Devils’ medical staff and FIFA’s medical and insurance authorities. Debast is currently training on his own under the RBFA’s Performance Department.
Debast returned to Belgium soon after sustaining the injury so national team medical staff could assess him, and he was subsequently named to Belgium’s 26-man World Cup squad by head coach Roberto Martínez, now led by Rudi Garcia. The defender missed Belgium’s group stage fixtures— a 1-1 draw with Egypt, a goalless encounter against Iran, and a commanding 5-1 victory over New Zealand. He also sat out the Round of 32 thriller where Belgium staged a dramatic 3-2 comeback win against Senegal. He did rejoin the squad as Belgium advanced past the World Cup hosts, the United States, with a 4-1 victory in the Round of 16.
The news that Sporting are blocking Debast from appearing against Spain will be a major setback, especially given the defender’s public confidence in his own fitness. After missing the group stage, Debast had said: “Everything is going as planned. I feel good. As a player, it is not easy to watch your team train and play without being able to participate. But I am grateful to be here and to be able to work on my return here.” Garcia, when pressed for updates on Debast’s injury, appeared reluctant to comment further. He stated: “Everyone apart from Amadou Onana is ready. He’s a huge loss for our tournament. There’s another player who is not available, who could play tomorrow but we will discuss this after the World Cup.”
With Spain and Belgium scheduled to meet in Los Angeles for a 3:00 pm ET kickoff, the spotlight will be on whether Debast will be eligible to play and how Belgium will adapt if he cannot feature. The clash represents a critical moment for Belgium as they aim to translate their strong group-stage performances into a deep run in the knockout rounds, despite the ongoing dispute with Sporting that has blocked Debast from joining the squad on match day. The situation will likely dominate discussions in the run-up to the quarterfinal, as the Red Devils weigh their options and decide how best to proceed against one of the tournament’s most formidable opponents.
