​Brian Parler played center in high school and both left and right tackle in college, so it’s natural to think the Bengals might plan to slot him at guard. Just kidding—Parker lacks the length to play on the outside and projects best as a guard. He’s a Jersey boy by birth who attended St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, and the Bengals used a sixth-round pick to bring him back home.
In the one-on-one and team clips above, Parker demonstrates quick feet, an encouraging sign for his transition to interior line play. Yet there are a couple of areas he must refine. His base sometimes gets too wide, and he sits too high, which hampers his ability to anchor and absorb power from a defender. Those are correctable flaws that offensive line coach Scott Peters will address with focused coaching and repetition.
In one clip, Parker leans a bit too much into the defender, but overall it’s a solid rep. He gives up a little ground, yet his immediate latch on the moment the rep begins signals who’s going to win. The balance and footwork issues align well with Peters’s area of expertise, suggesting Parker can tighten those fundamentals with time.
Where Parker stands out is as a run blocker. Watch his reach block: starting from tackle, he reaches a 2i defensive tackle lined up in the A gap without hesitation. That level of athleticism from a 310-pound player is impressive and speaks to his potential in the running game. In another look, he handles a frontside double team on outside zone. The 4i defensive tackle shifts wide to engage, but Parker maintains excellent body position and prevents penetration. As the guard digs in, Parker works up to the second level, allowing the play to develop with momentum on the offense’s side.
This footage also offers a glimpse into Parker’s demeanor. He kick-steps and executes a solid block on the edge rusher. Though a late-arriving guard adds to the effort, Parker’s initial block is clean, and the sequence ends with him and his teammate delivering a punishing final blow, driving the defender into the ground.
Parker embodies the kind of gritty, “mean” competitor you want on the offensive line. He does have some issues that contributed to him being a later-round pick, but the majority of those concerns are correctable through hard work and high-quality coaching. If he continues to refine his balance, footwork, and technique, he has a clear path to contributing in the Bengals’ interior line dynamic.
