The 52-point win is the biggest U.S. win in the FIBA Women’s World Cup so far. Team USA romped to a 24-point lead and never looked back. A team tends to take on its coach’s personality, and Lawson has shown that she’s a tremendous coach on defense. We’ve raved before that we’ve never seen a team, men’s or women’s, that forced 30 or more turnovers in multiple games, but Duke has done that, and this team is getting there: the U.S. scored 44 points off 27 turnovers. Only three players failed to get a steal. Realistically, there’s no coming back from that. In an interesting note, FIBA provided some unexpected motivation for Team USA by moving France to #1 in the official power rankings, and dropping the U.S. to #2.France is also really good, but we’re not sure anyone is playing defense like the U.S. is, and the team has probably registered the snub. However, before they can get a crack at the French, they have to play Spain, and the Spanish are pretty good, too. That game is on Saturday.
