With training camp approaching, we will spotlight the single most pressing question facing each of the Indianapolis Colts’ position groups. Up next are the tight ends, with a focus on Tyler Warren.
Warren’s rookie campaign was a striking success. He finished among the more productive tight ends in the NFL, recording 76 receptions for 817 yards and four touchdowns. His performance earned him a Pro Bowl nod. But evaluating Warren’s impact purely through the lens of the passing game undersells his overall contribution to the offense. His proficiency in the run game and his versatility inject a degree of unpredictability that is valuable for the Colts. Warren can operate in multiple roles, which gives head coach Shane Steichen greater flexibility when crafting game plans and creates opportunities not only for Warren himself but for his teammates as well.
Yet even with a strong first year, Warren has identified a specific offseason emphasis: preserving separation on his routes. Improving that aspect should translate into more explosive plays. “For me, the big thing is the explosion out of my breaks,” Warren told The Athletic’s James Boyd. “Getting into the break is one thing, but being able to accelerate out of it and still — you create that space, but being able to hold that space is really big. But really, when it comes down to all of the little fundamentals, I think that’s the biggest thing in this league. Everyone is so good; you’ve got to have everything you’re doing to the T and perfect.”
The continuity of Warren remaining in Steichen’s system for a second season could also contribute to a leap in year two. Rather than learning a new scheme again, Warren and Steichen can build on what has already been established. There’s also the potential to deepen his rapport with quarterback Daniel Jones, which could help unlock additional growth for Warren.
“Certainly expect him to be a big part of the offense again, and he’s making a jump on what was a really, really good rookie season,” Jones said, per Mike Chappell of FOX59.
