​Josh Allen is 30 years old, entering his ninth NFL season with the Bills. He did exactly what franchise quarterbacks do when asked about life after football: he said it could be interesting, as long as it is done the right way.”I do think it would be cool if you can keep it from a strictly broadcasting angle,” Allen said to CNBC. “When players go from players to journalists and say certain things that they hated people saying about them, I think that’s where it gets a little murky for me.”For a player who has spent the last several years at the center of the NFL’s media conversation machine, Allen has heard different sides, perspectives, and critique — not clutch enough, not precise enough, too reckless, too many turnovers — His winning the MVP award silenced some but not all of them.And while he made it clear he is not making any retirement plans, he did indicate he would “entertain” broadcasting eventually, but added that he goes “back and forth” on it and would need to put more thought into it.The QB turned 30 in May. His current contract runs through 2030, when he will be 34. For most players, that age range is the back nine. For Allen, it is hard to tell where he is on the course because he is still playing at the level of the best quarterbacks in the league. The Bills are not thinking about a post-Allen future yet. They are thinking about maximizing his career competition window.The message from the organization is that the championship window is now. Allen talking about broadcasting is not a distraction by itself, but it is a reminder that windows someday close.Allen has at least one contract cycle left in him after the current deal. Whether Allen is still playing at an elite level when it is time to re-negotiate another pact will depend on how healthy and productive he is between now and 2030. Allen has the personality and the stature to be a natural in that space if he wants it.
