Birds ninth inning rally comes up short

Kansas City, KS – The Canaries came up just short in a late rally as they dropped the final game before the All-Star break, falling 6-4 to the Kansas City Monarchs. The Monarchs burst out to an early lead, pushing four runs across in the second inning. They benefited from a wild pitch and a sacrifice groundout that plated two runs, followed by a two-run homer that amplified their cushion and set the tone for the afternoon.
Sioux Falls answered with a spark in the top of the fifth when Grady Mee launched a two-run homer to trim the deficit to 4-2. The spark was short-lived, however, as Kansas City answered with two crucial RBI singles in the sixth inning, producing two more runs with two outs to restore a comfortable lead.
The Canaries mounted a late threat in the ninth, loading the bases with nobody out in the final frame. Mike Hart drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, and Josh Rehwaldt added an RBI sacrifice fly, but Sioux Falls could not string together the hit they needed to close the gap any further. The late rally ultimately fell just short, leaving the Canaries on the wrong side of the 6-4 score.
Mee and Trevor Achenbach each collected two hits for Sioux Falls, who slip to 26-27 on the season. The team now shifts its focus to the nine-game homestand that opens Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against Lincoln. This stretch marks the final tune-up before the league resumes after the All-Star break, with the Canaries aiming to gain momentum in front of their home crowd.
