Blue Jays Make Major Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Change Ahead of Padres Series Finale

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is a key figure for the Toronto Blue Jays as they navigate a challenging season. Heading into the 2026 All-Star break, Toronto has shown flashes of momentum after a period of inconsistency, inching closer to the .500 mark and trying to gain ground in a crowded AL East.
In their final series before the break against the San Diego Padres, the Blue Jays had a dramatic opener, and Game 2 carried similar drama, though Toronto ultimately dropped an 8-7 decision. With Kevin Gausman slated to start the finale, the club announced some lineup adjustments, including a shift for their star slugger.
On this West Coast road trip, Guerrero Jr. has found a spark. He snapped a home run drought against the Giants and then connected again against the Padres on Saturday night, driving in three runs on a 2-for-4 night. The team is working to keep him in the lineup while he works through his struggles, but a change in role was made ahead of the series finale: Guerrero was moved to the Designated Hitter spot, with Sean Keys stepping in at first base.
Keys, a standout rookie in 2026, has shown enough early promise to earn a regular look. He’s collected one homer and five RBIs through his first 29 plate appearances, offering a glimpse of his potential as he adjusts to Major League Baseball.
Despite Guerrero’s recent improvements, his first half has been marked by power droughts that have dominated conversations among Blue Jays fans. Before this recent stretch, he had only four homers over 85 games, contributing to a .710 OPS along with six long balls and 41 RBIs on the season. The club has also benefited from the power surge of Japanese rookie Kazuma Okamoto, who has provided much-needed pop for Toronto.
If the Blue Jays are to rebound from a 45-50 start and push toward a postseason berth, Guerrero’s performance will be pivotal. He has already shown a willingness to step back from the All-Star Game to tend to a lingering minor injury, which speaks to his dedication to the team. With a 5-for-17 stretch over his previous four games, including two homers and six RBIs, there are signs that Guerrero is beginning to turn a corner.
The Blue Jays are hoping Guerrero can use the break to heal, reset mentally, and return refreshed for a strong second half. If he can sustain the momentum from the last two series and keep advancing his conditioning and confidence, he has the talent to carry Toronto to a much more competitive stretch run. The organization remains hopeful that their highest-paid star can rediscover his peak form and help lead a late-season push for a Wild Card berth, even as the club continues to navigate injuries and other obstacles in 2026.
