St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong announced on Friday night that the team has agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with center Oskar Sundqvist. The deal is structured so Sundqvist will earn $850,000 if he spends time on the NHL roster and $300,000 if he plays in the American Hockey League. Sundqvist, 32, had been an unrestricted free agent after contributing in 52 games for the Blues last season, finishing with 17 points (five goals and 12 assists). He has spent two separate periods with St. Louis, appearing in 432 regular-season games for the Blues and recording 141 points (52 goals, 89 assists) alongside 180 penalty minutes.
Sundqvist was a key contributor during the Blues’ 2019 playoff run, appearing in 25 postseason contests and helping the organization capture its first Stanley Cup. He has embraced St. Louis as his home and has not shown a willingness to move on, though his place on the team’s NHL roster for the upcoming 2026-27 season will be earned through competition in training camp and pre-season. The Boden, Sweden native has logged a total of 545 regular-season NHL games across his career, including stints with the Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins and Blues, compiling 181 points (67 goals, 114 assists) along with 281 penalty minutes.
Looking ahead, Sundqvist’s return provides the Blues with veteran depth up front and a familiar presence in the locker room as they continue shaping their 2026-27 roster. His experience in St. Louis and his prior success with the organization will be weighed against younger contenders in camp as the team aims to balance immediate needs with long-term development.
In related Blues news, prospect Dmitry Buchelnikov, a 2022 second-round pick acquired from Detroit, recently spent time in St. Louis at development camp. The young forward is determined to turn his childhood dream of playing in the NHL into reality, and he indicates a strong faith in the Blues’ development system and their belief in his potential. Buchelnikov remains committed to another year in the KHL before the potential transition to North America, per the team’s guidance and his own career plan. His progression continues to be watched closely by Blues fans eager to see new talent rise through the organization.
