Every year I forecast which Boise State players will stand out, and this season’s list was tougher than usual given the number of unproven players. The Broncos look more proven on offense, a trend reflected in this countdown. After highlighting a hard-hitting linebacker last week, we shift to the last line of defense with a safety expected to make a big impact this fall. Number eight on the list is Derek Ganter Jr.
Ganter Jr., a junior defensive back, may surprise many Boise State fans by cracking the top ten. He was mostly a reserve last season but shined when stepping in for Zion Washington, proving himself as a sure tackler and a key part of stopping the run. He finished the 2025 season with 27 tackles, with his best performances coming in games against Fresno State and Nevada, where he totaled 13 tackles and excelled in pass coverage.
Ganter began his college career at Eastern Washington before transferring to Boise State in the spring of 2025. With Ty Benefield moving on to LSU and Zion Washington graduating, he’s expected to anchor the defense. Beyond his on-field production, his emergence as a leader and elite safety is viewed as critical to Boise State’s success this season.
