Bold prediction: The Buckeyes will lead the country in turnover margin in 2026

As preseason camp kicks off this week, Land-Grant Holy Land is diving into its final weekly theme of the off-season. This week’s focus is on making predictions that may stretch the imagination—some might even call them bold. Turnovers are inherently unplanned and volatile, sprang from both egregious offensive mistakes and perfectly timed defensive plays, and they bring a little extra drama to football. Because of their unpredictable nature, the turnover margin tends to stay quiet in the background of the box score. We all recognize its importance, yet I’d wager that most fans can’t recite their team’s turnover margin on command the way they can recount completion rates.
This year, though, I believe this historically fickle stat could be a strong suit for the Buckeyes. In fact, I’m willing to go so far as to predict that Ohio State could lead the nation in turnover margin. Over the past two seasons, the Buckeyes have finished in the top 50 (No. 46 in 2025 and No. 50 in 2024), but the nature of this stat means it tends to swing widely. In 2023, they ended the year at No. 81, while in 2022 they climbed to No. 17.
Ohio State isn’t unique in this regard—elite defenses often end up in the middle of the pack on turnover margin, and few teams sustain dominance in this metric year after year. Turnover margins reflect both defensive prowess and the offense’s consistency, and while the defense is typically the primary driver of takeaways, the offense must cooperate to balance the margin.
That said, I’d argue that beyond raw talent, Ohio State brings a distinctive mix of elements that could push them into the upper echelon of this stat in 2026. Defensive continuity, an aggressive philosophy, and elite recruiting collectively give the Buckeyes a potent toolkit to generate takeaways. If they can harness that toolkit effectively, there’s a clear path to an impressive, best-in-class turnover margin in 2026.
The success of this prediction will rest largely on the defense, which is one of the season’s biggest questions. Can Ohio State maintain defensive consistency while leaning into an aggressive approach that produces more mishaps for opponents? The answer to that will significantly influence not only their turnover margin but the team’s overall success in the upcoming season. As the defense takes charge, the potential to flip games through timely interceptions and forced fumbles remains a tantalizing possibility for the Buckeyes in 2026.
