​Boston College and Rutgers will face each other in Week 2, but the meeting will be more than a football game.The ACC-Big Ten matchup takes place on Friday, Sept. 11, 25 years after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. While it affected the entire country, it hit home for both Boston College and Rutgers given their close proximity − Rutgers is the closest FBS team to New York City − and the alumni it lost in the attacks.To commemorate the day, each team will be wearing special uniforms in what signifies a unified moment taking place at Boston College’s Alumni Stadium.Rutgers uniforms honor 9/11The home team will don its traditional red jerseys with a white helmet with the No. 37 and the American flag inside the number. No. 37 signifies the 37 Rutgers alumni that died in the 9/11 attacks, honoring them on the helmet.Also on the side of the pants are the words “Never Forget.”As we take the field on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we honor all of those whose lives were lost on that tragic day, including our 37 @RutgersU alumni.We remember. The game against Rutgers will be the 13th annual Red Bandanna Game.The Red Bandanna Game is in honor of Welles Crowther, a former Boston College lacrosse player. Crowther was in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, and helped several people escape safely after United Airlines Flight 175 struck the tower. While helping people, he used a red bandana over his face to protect himself from the smoke. He was last seen returning up the tower before it collapsed.The people Crowther saved didn’t know who he was, and they referred to him as “the man with the red bandana.” After the story was publicized, Crowther’s family realized it was him that rescued people, and it was confirmed. He has been honored by several people and organizations since then, including receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Sept. 8.In tribute of the former Boston College student, the Eagles football team introduced the Red Bandanna Game in 2014, which was an upset of Southern California.For the Red Bandanna Game, Boston College wears white uniforms with the red bandana design on their sleeves, chest logo and helmet stripe.
